It's actually an interesting idea (and it should be great for Nintendo, if Disney Infinity and Skylanders are anything to go on), but what I'm wondering is this: Could it be Nintendo's answer to DLC?
In the past they haven't had much to do with DLC, partly (I suspect) because developers don't think it's worth it on Nintendo consoles at the moment. This however, gives them room to add stuff to games in a way that's unique to Nintendo (in the sense that Sony and Microsoft are always going to just have DLC), and gives you something a bit more than just a download code and 2 hours more gameplay (obviously that's not always the case with DLC, like for example any of the Elder Scrolls games where the DLC is massive).
I'm skeptical about the idea because of how expensive Skylanders and Disney Infinity characters are, but if it does unlock something in loads of different games then I guess it's like the e-reader or the PSP's camera that came with Invizimals, but built in and less gimmicky.
